|About the museum:
The absolute need for the protection of the island of Hvar, a place that because of all its cultural, natural and in particular climatic features has outstanding preconditions for the tourist industry, was noted long ago, but systematic attention has been paid to this since the 1950s. Crucial in this respect was the backing of Dr Niko Duboković Nadalini, through whose endeavours in 1950 the commune of Hvar founded the History Archives, for the sake of the organised conduct of cultural activities on the island of Hvar. Dr Duboković was first of all engaged on the collection and rescuing of archival records, which had been neglected and fairly ruined, particularly during and just after World War II. Dr Duboković felt of his island as a complete and integrated open air museum, fully aware of the inseparability of its natural and cultural history values. Since the need was seen for the protection of the cultural and natural properties, the establishment of the Historical Archives extended its activity from the primary archival to the organisation of cultural monuments, to the creation of a kind of network of trustees, the foundation of museum collections, specialised library and various kinds of documentation. In 1965 the association was re-registered and it became the Centre for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage of the Island of Hvar. The centre was charged with three kinds of activity: archival, museological and conservational. In 2002 the Hvar Heritage Museum was inscribed as the legal successor of the Centre in the register of institutions, its basic activity being that of museum. The centre of the Museum is in the Renaissance villa of poet Hanibal Lucić. The Archaeological Collection and the Lapidarium of Dr Grga Novak are located in the former Dominican St Mark’s Church. In the Arsenal building there are the collections of the museum, the historical Hvar Theatre and the Arsenal Modern Art Gallery. The museum organises ad hoc exhibitions in its premises, as well as lectures and promotions, and hosts concerts.
