O muzeju:
The museum is located on the main town square in a building constructed over a section of the defensive 17th century city walls. The museum was opened to the public in 1970 and has a permanent ethnographic collection comprising popular material culture items from the region of Buje, coming mostly from the holdings of the Ethnographic Museum of Istria in Pazin.
Typical settings related to agriculture and crafts have been reconstructed in the rustic ambience of the museum’s ground floor.
Tools for cultivating fields depict the region of Buje as the country of wine grapes and olive trees. An olive press and a stone receptacle for oil all speak to the long tradition of olive oil production.
A smithy is represented with its typical inventory: the bellows, an anvil, vices and a lathe.
A traditional kitchen and other household-related items are exhibited on the first floor; a bedroom with a loom and hand-made textiles is on the second floor.
The top floor area where carved chests are displayed is also used for temporary exhibitions.
